A Short History of UK House Music: From Warehouse Raves to Global Sound

· 7 min read · Addy Records

House music was born in Chicago in the early 1980s, but the UK took it, reshaped it and sent it back around the world. Here's the short version of that story.

Chicago roots

House grew out of disco, soul and drum machines in Chicago clubs. Records made cheaply on machines like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909 travelled across the Atlantic, where they found a hungry audience.

Acid house and the Second Summer of Love

In 1988 and 1989, acid house exploded across Britain. Warehouse parties and outdoor raves brought thousands of people together, and the music changed UK youth culture for good.

London makes it its own

Through the 1990s, London producers blended house with soul, jungle and R&B influences. UK garage — with its swung rhythms and chopped vocals — became a distinctly British take on the house blueprint.

Today's scene

Deep house, tech house, minimal and garage revivals all sit side by side in London clubs today. Independent labels remain the engine room, giving new artists their first releases and shaping what the scene sounds like next.
