Deep House vs Tech House: What's the Difference?
· 5 min read · Addy Records
Both live under the house umbrella, both sit around 120–126 BPM, and both fill dancefloors. But they feel very different. Here's how to tell them apart.
Deep house
Deep house leans on warm chords, jazz and soul influences, rolling basslines and space. It tends to be a touch slower and more melodic, often built for the early hours or sunset sets.
Tech house
Tech house borrows the tight, driving drums of techno and pairs them with house groove. Expect punchy percussion, chunky bass hooks and minimal, functional arrangements made for peak time.
Why it matters for producers
Labels, playlists and stores sort music by genre. Tagging your track correctly helps the right DJs and listeners find it — and helps A&R teams judge whether it fits their catalogue.
- Warm chords and a mellow groove? Probably deep house.
- Driving drums and a bass hook? Probably tech house.
- Still unsure? Ask which DJs you'd expect to play it.
